Guest Lecturer: Paul F. Keimig, Chemical Resources Inc.

Biosketch: Mr. Keimig graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry from Rutgers in 1986, and thereafter went to work as a Research and Development Technician with Union Carbide in the Specialty Polyolefin Division (now part of Dow Chemical) in Bound Brook, New Jersey. While there he worked on geomembrane, film, pipe, injection and blow molding resins. Mr. Keimig also developed starch based polymer formulations during his tenure at Carbide.

After two years in R&D, Mr. Keimig was assigned several roles in technical sales covering the northeastern United States initially servicing the geomembrane liner resins which he had developed while in R&D. Mr. Keimig left Union Carbide in 1989 and joined Solvay Polymers Polypropylene Division as a Technical Sales Representative. He remained at Solvay developing the compounding, injection and blow molding markets for the next three years, during which time he increased sales from 30 million pounds to in excess of 200 million and received the Salesman of the Year and the Presidential award in the same year. Mr. Keimig then left Solvay and started his own company in 1995 - Chemical Resources, Inc.

Chemical Resources is a global supplier of commodity and engineering resins. The company headquarters is in Princeton, New Jersey with operations in Jacksonville, Florida and Chesapeake, Virginia. The business consists of three core divisions; resin distribution and compounding, plastic packaging and industrial recycling. Chemical Resources, Inc. customer base Johnson & Johnson, 3M, Old Navy, Sheisiedo and BP.

CCB Colloquium,
11:00 a.m., WL-Aud

Dr. William J. Evans will present a seminar on Tuesday, May 6, 2008.

Talk title: "The Importance of Questioning Scientific Assumptions: Some Lessons from F Element Chemistry"

Abstract: As scientists we know that we should constantly question the assumptions upon which our research is based. We also know that we do not do this often enough. This lecture will serve to remind us not to take the traditional boundaries of any area of chemistry for granted. Recent results in f element chemistry will be presented which show how the "rules" in this area, thought to be true for decades, have been recently overturned. Examples will be presented that challenge previous ideas on topics as fundamental as redox chemistry and bond lengths. Several new ways of doing reductive chemistry will be discussed as well as the synthesis of "long bond organometallics" that have unconventional bond distances and reactivity.
