Chemistry & Chemical Biology / New Brunswick

Department

Welcome from the Chair

In the department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, education and research go hand in hand. A major goal of our program is to train research scientists to create new knowledge in their careers as leaders in academe, industry or government.

Our undergraduate program recently won Rutgers University's Award for Programmatic Excellence in Undergraduate Education. Undergraduate research provides a strong foundation for jobs in industry or government or for advanced study, and is strongly encouraged. The Department has the largest fraction of women faculty of any major university, and Rutgers ranks in the top 10 for student diversity.

Our Ph.D. program encourages students to begin research at the end of the first semester of study, following an introduction to research course in which students are introduced to the research of several professors, and get to meet them. A Masters program can be completed as a full or part time student, with or without a research thesis, and is particularly attractive to students who are employed full time in the local chemical or pharmaceutical industries. Doctoral and masters degrees are available in all major areas of chemistry. The graduate student body includes more than 100 full time and 35 part time students. Ph. D. degrees are available in all the major areas of chemistry. In the annual National Science Foundation listing, the Department typically ranks in or near the top 10 public universities in both total research funding and federal research funding, and has more than $75 million in current and committed funding. Interdisciplinary research is also encouraged, and joint doctoral studies with a number of other Rutgers' Departments are available.
