Meet Glassblower Jacob Moskowitz

Rutgers Scientific Glassblowing Services is a special asset to the Rutgers Community. Head Glassblower Jacob Moskowitz graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2011 with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Glass. During school, his study focused on borosilicate glass, working over a bench torch to create his work. After graduation, he moved back to New Jersey and in 2011 opened JM Glass Co. Through the business, he along with his team create commissioned artwork and custom drink-ware, as well as wedding and holiday gifts.

"If you break it we can fix it, if you dream it we can build it."

In 2016 Jacob joined Rutgers University as the Scientific Glassblower, which was a new and exciting path. Using the same material he was familiar with, he experienced a different side of it— science opposed to art. Through this position, he focuses on working with and assisting students and professors with the glass tools they use in their research. This is the most important part of his position. He can take a sketch and turn it into the perfect apparatus necessary for the research or help them problem solve to get the results they need.

There's a slogan on the door of his shop on campus. “If you break it we can fix it, if you dream it we can build it.” From the most complex to the very simple repairs, no job is too big or to small, and the more abstract of a piece, the more excited he is to create it. Whether it's a small flask that needs a new valve, a manifold that needs a new arm, or we need to create a reactor cell, Jacob’s ability to take a sketch and make it into an apparatus a student dreamed up is a direct result of his art background. Problem solving and engineering are his specialties.

Jake is available on Thursdays in WL 011. Click here to submit a workorder to schedule your glassblowing services.
