Platform bionanotechnologies for the development of therapeutics and diagnostics

Advancements in drug and diagnostic development have enabled significant gains in medicine and medical technology. Case-in-point, the biotechnology industry which has benefited from fundamental advancements in genetic engineering. Nanotechnology and its toolbox of nanoparticles, polymers, peptides and nucleic acids offers tremendous potential for similar medical advancements. In this talk, Dr. Gormley will outline efforts to develop new therapeutic and diagnostic platform technologies by leveraging the self-assembly of these nanoscale components. Examples will include: 1) coiled-coil self-assembled drug carriers; 2) polymerization-amplified detection for nanoparticle-based biosensing; as well as 3) new and ongoing work in high-throughput discovery of well-defined polymeric drugs. The development of these fundamental platform technologies and others will play an instrumental role in future medical technologies that will increasingly rely on tools at the nanoscale.

~Coffee/tea will be served prior to lecture.~
