Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology

Date: July 27, 2016

RFS Image webThe Rutgers Future Scholars program is designed to introduce first-generation, low-income and academically-talented middle school students from New Brunswick, Piscataway, Newark, and Camden to a college education. Students are eligible to participate in the program starting with the summer before they begin eigth grade and continue throughout their high school years. Over the 5 year program, these students are offered a unique experience of events, support and mentoring that will prepare them for a successful college experience. All participants that complete the program and are admitted to Rutgers receive a scholarship that covers the full cost of tuition for four academic years.

This year, a group of 20 rising 10th grade students who are interested in Chemistry visited CCB. The students met with Dr. Gene Hall and discussed his research on water analysis, a topic they are currently studying. They were also able to meet with current graduate students to discuss the endless opportunities available to students with a Chemistry major. Finally, Robert Porcja performed a demonstration on the explosive reaction of hydrogen and oxygen using balloons.

The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology is proud to work with the Rutgers Future Scholars program to encourage students to explore their interests in both the college and chemistry experience.
