Andy Pic“Solid State NMR at Rutgers: Very Fast MAS of Proteins and Lipids”

Solid-state NMR as a field has been revolutionized in recent years by the introduction of hardware capable of ever increase magic-angle-spinning rates. These newfound capabilities have enabled experiment types that were previously not possible in the solid state. I will present data from the newly upgraded spectrometers here at Rutgers, which demonstrate some of the potential these systems have to offer. I will focus on two projects: the direct observation of phosphatidylinositol phosphates (PIPs) in lipid bilayers, and 100+ kHz experiments to determine the chemical shift assignments and structure of small protein domains. In both cases, very-fast spinning has opened up new avenues for research, and we have contributed novel experiments to address pressing questions.
