Jose Mercado, a RISE alumni and student at the University of Puerto Rico – Río Piedras, won Best Poster Presentation in Chemistry at the 2018 ABRCMS. Jose spent this past summer working in Dr. Spencer Knapp's laboratory, preparing his symposium project "Synthesis of New Antimalarials."
"The fact that I was able to convey the science efficiently was due to my RISE PI and mentor, as well as the RISE seminars. Practicing communicating my work and explaining it to non-experts really helped me look at the project from all different angles and do a great job presenting my poster!
If anything, this award is testament to the great work being done at Rutgers, both at the bench and outside the lab. Thank you so much!"

The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) brings together one of the largest communities of underrepresented students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students from over 350 colleges and universities present posters and platform talks in twelve STEM disciplines.
The School of Graduate Studies hosted two exhibit booths to advise and recruit undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students who are considering advanced study. The conference featured over 12 hours of dedicated exhibit time spread over 3 days as well as extensive opportunities for networking and professional development.
